Adam pointed the SeaRay west, and they headed about 35 miles away to the lovely harbor town of Vermilion.
There, nestled on the waterâs edge, a charming lakeside restaurant with an upper and a lower patio came into view. Next to the lower patio, Isaac could see a couple of smaller boats already docked. Adam cut the motor and they slipped in behind one of those boats.
âHey, Ike, can you tie her off?â he called out.
âYep.â
Isaac got up and tied the boat to one of the posts on the dock next to the restaurant. Then he zipped the legs back onto his cargo pants and put them and the t-shirt back on and ran his hands through his air-dried hair in an effort to make himself look presentable after his ordeal.
They disembarked from the boat and snagged a table on the lower patio where they could watch all the boats go by.
The ladies excused themselves to go inside the restaurant to the bathroom. When they were alone, Adam turned to Isaac.
âShe is terrific, Ike.â
Isaac smiled at him.
âIâm serious. Before all the excitement back there with the overboard kids, Bree took me aside and said that she loves her.â
âOh, yeah?â
âShe asked if we could keep her. She said Sidneyâs smart and funny and she seems to really be into you.â
That got Isaacâs attention.
âWhat? Did Sidney say something to Bree?â
Adam grinned and shrugged a shoulder. âI donât know. She must have. But Bree said she thinks sheâs perfect for you.â
Isaacâs stomach fluttered. What the hell was that?
And why was he asking silly high school questions? More than that⦠Why couldnât he stop?
âAnd what do you think?â he asked, looking Adam in the eyes. He wasnât sure why, but his brotherâs opinion of Sidney mattered a lot to him.
âIâve just told you what I think. Sheâs terrific.â
He rolled his eyes. âBe more specific.â
âWell, Iâve watched you two together all day long now, and Iâve gotta say, I like it. I mean, itâs like youâre a teenager in love or something. You can barely keep your hands off her.â
âThatâs not true.â
Isaac made a face at him even though he suspected his brother was right. He loved touching Sidney. He did it every chance he got.
âUh, yeah, it is! But itâs cute. I mean, it makes sense. Youâve been dodging physical touch for so long. But now, with her, you donât have to. Plus, you are literally like a whole different person around her. Youâre not so closed off and guarded all the time. Itâs nice to see, man.â
Isaac thought about his brotherâs assessment of the situation and he frowned. His gaze focused on the menu in front of him, but he didnât really see it. Something about what Adam said troubled him.
âYou know⦠this isnât like Iâm suddenly turning over a new leaf or something, Adam. I mean, being closed off and guarded is something I have to do to stay sane and free of physical pain.â
âI know that.â
âSidney is the only person Iâve ever met in my life that I donât have to be that way around.
